How to Roll the Perfect Blunt

If you’ve been rolling joints for a while but you’re ready to step up to the big leagues, it’s time to learn how to roll a blunt. Some of the mechanics are the same as joint-rolling, but there are also some important differences that you’ll need to keep in mind—like the paper itself. Don’t worry, though. Rolling a blunt is easy; like anything, it just takes a bit of practice and refinement. If you want to smoke blunts, this skill is essential.

1. Gather Your Supplies

Before you can roll the perfect blunt, you have to have your supplies in order. You’re going to need the following:

  • 1 to 2 grams of your favorite weed strain (or whatever strain you have lying around)

  • Blunt wraps (you need a dedicated blunt wrap made from tobacco leaf—otherwise you’re just rolling a jumbo-sized joint)

  • A weed grinder (not required, but highly recommended for achieving an even consistency and preventing contamination)

  • A rolling tray (again, not required, but it will help keep the mess to a minimum and will make your rolling efforts much easier)

  • A lighter (for some obvious and not-so-obvious reasons)

You can find all of these products and supplies at your local dispensary. For instance, Higher Leaf in Seattle has everything you need to roll blunts to perfection.

2. Grind Your Weed

If you’re experienced with rolling joints, you should already be comfortable with this step. Before you can pack your blunt wrap, you have to break up the buds. You can do it with your fingers if necessary, but we highly recommend packing your weed into a grinder and letting the tool do the work for you.

Not only will you get a much cleaner product to sprinkle into your tobacco leaf wrap, but you won’t get the resin on your fingers (nor will you get the oils from your skin on the cannabis). Also, grinding weed has been known to reduce potency to some extent, but you don’t have to worry about this as much if you use a grinder designed for the job.

Finally, using a grinder is incredibly quick and easy. Just place your weed into the grinder, close the lid, and turn it a few times. Then you’re ready to start rolling.

3. Prepare Your Blunt Wrap

Lay your blunt paper flat and moisten it just a little bit to make it pliable. You can lick the wrap, or you can run a damp finger over the wrap to loosen it up. The key is to moisten it but not saturate it. If you get the wrap too wet, you may cause it to burn unevenly. It may take a few attempts to get the moisture ratio just right, but you’ll get the hang of it.

If you don’t have blunt wraps available, you can also hollow out a cigar and use that as your wrap. Just take a sharp knife or razor blade and gently unravel the cigar. Then dump the tobacco out of the cigar or cigarillo wrap and moisten the paper just as you would a standard blunt wrap.

4. Fill the Blunt Wrap With Your Ground Cannabis

Spread your ground cannabis on the rolling tray, and hold your open blunt wrap in one hand. Start filling the inside of the tobacco wrap one pinch of ground weed at a time. If you’re wondering how much weed to use, one to two grams should do the trick (compare that to a joint, which usually requires no more than a third of a gram). You want to fill it up as much as you can, but you still have to leave enough room to wrap and seal it. Think of it like filling a burrito. If you fill it too much, stuff is going to spill out.

If you overstuff it, don’t worry. You can always push aside the excess weed on your rolling tray. That’s part of the reason why you have a rolling tray in the first place.

5. Roll Your Blunt

Finally, you’re ready to roll your blunt. First, fold the rolling paper part way and squeeze any clumps until the weed is evenly distributed from end to end. You want a nice smooth row of cannabis to work with, so pack your blunt evenly. Then fold one end of the blunt wrap over the other and seal it all together using water. You can use your saliva or a slightly dampened sponge or finger.

Finally, you’ll want to seal the wrap. To do this, use your lighter to bake it in place. Just run the flame along the seam of the blunt wrap and you’re ready to go. That’s all there is to it. Now you’re ready to light, inhale, and enjoy.
